Babes in Toyland (1961)

Babes in Toyland (1961)  The happiest, most delightful musical comedy of your lifetime!
By the early 1960s, there was little Walt Disney hadn't captured on film. Nearly every genre had been covered, except for the live action musical.

So put on your best smile, set free your imagination, and come with us to Mother Goose Village.-Mother Goose:
When you Visit a place like Mother Goose Village it’s no surprise that the inhabitants often sing and dance out of the blue with that mysterious music that comes from no where. You get to meet such celebrities as Bo Peep (Ann Jillian) Boy Blue (Disney Great Kevin Corcoran) Wille Winkie (Brian Corcoran) and Mother Goose (Mary McCarty) herself along with her wise-cracking goose, Sylvester J. Goose.
Mary Mary Quite Contrary ( Disney Beauty Annette) and Tom Tom the Piper’s Son (Pretty Boy Tommy Sands) are to be  wed in holy matrimony.

This dismays the town villain Barnaby (Ray Boldger, none other then Scarecrow of Oz) who wants to marry Mary Mary. If he marries her not only will he get a gorgeous babe (in Toyland) of a wife, he’ll get a gorgeous amount of $$$ that Mary Mary has recently inherited (but does not know about.)

He instructs his two Laurel and Hardy type henchmen, Gonzago (Henry Calvin) and the silent Roderigo (Gene Sheldon) to throw Tom Tom into the sea. Interestingly it was Laurel and Hardy who played two goofy good guys in the previous cinematic telling of this tale based on the 1903 Operetta.

Through a series of events Tom Tom & Mary Mary end up in the Forrest of No Return where the trees (who are really Ents) come to life and escort the happy couple, a group of children and some sheep to the home of the Toymaker (Ed Wynn).

It is here in the toyshop that the Scarecrow squares off against Tom Tom with some comedic action supplied by the Toymaker’s assistant genius inventor Grumio’s (Disney Great Tommy Kirk) shrink ray gun. Characters are shrunk, Mayhem ensues, and the Wooden Soldiers march in to save the day.

Babes in Toyland is a fun, lively, colorful, and enchanting comedic fantasy Disney Musical that is worth a trip to Mother Goose land for the whole family and deserves a place in the Old Woman in the Shoe’s family library.

Tom and Mary, Tom and Mary / Goodbye, good luck to you / Tom and Mary, Tom and Mary / Your beautiful dream has come true / Two lives blended as intended / While all the world, in tune / Smiles divinely for you're finally / On your honeymoon.
