Nikki, Wild Dog of the North 1961
Jacques Fauteux the Canadian radio and television announcer and
presenter narrated this tale of the wild dog of the north. Nikki is another
delightful documentary style fictional animal tale from Disney. It starts out with
Nikki as a pup gently cruising the river with his master Andre
Dupas played by Canadian actor Jean Coutu one of the few Quebecers of his era
to have appeared in Hollywood productions. Through a series of mishaps, the story soon
turns into a version of the film The Defiant Ones with Nikki tied together with
a baby bear cub named Neewa, lost in the Canadian wilderness, separated from
his master. These are the types of
things that happen in this type of movie. The beloved pet gets separated from
his master and goes off on a journey of self discovery.
Will Nikki return to his master? Will the bear return with him? Will
Nikki survive the brutal dog fight arena? Nikki gets picked up by the villain Jacques
Lebeau (Emile Genest) and his reluctant Indian companion, Makoki (Uriel Luft).
This guy really earns a place in Disney history as a really nasty villain. He deserves to be ranked up their with Cruella
and Jaffar. Nikki like other Disney
films of the era doesn’t dumb down the action and deals with some grown up
stuff while making it so the whole family can partake in viewing the naturalistic
saga of Nikki and companions. Because this takes place in the cruel world of
nature there are lots of animal fights and a human fight also.
If you like simplistic uncomplicated films and you like animals
this is picture worth watching.
