The Castaway Cowboy

James Garner is a Texas Cowboy named Lincoln Costain that is somehow kidnapped from his homeland and is brought to the Hawaiian Islands for reasons not explained.  It's tough when that happens. At least Tom Hanks knew how he got to his island. Of course he was by himself with no civilization and a beach ball for a companion.  Costain (as his friends call him) comes under the protective care of the local widow Henrietta MacAvoy (Vera Miles) and her son  Booton 'Little Maca' MacAvoy (Eric Shea).

Her potato farm is not doing too well, thanks to all the wild cattle running around destroying her crops and gardens.  Lo and behold Costain comes up with the idea of rounding up the Cattle and selling them just like they do in Texas. Sell Cattle and get them off the island? It's never been done before in Hawaii. And with the locals who end up becoming in-experienced cowboys it proves to be a challenge and a 1/2.

They end up doing things like roping each other, falling off their horses and play on the natural waterslide and go swimming when they should be working.  This plot point  is the main focus of the entire picture. Off to sidelines is the greedy rich man Calvin Bryson (Robert Culp) who tries to sabotage the cattle rustling so he can get the widow's land and maybe the widow. The villain is there to try and provide the hero with an excuse to punch the guy at some point in the picture.

The movie is a pleasant little stay in this little western on an island. It's neither glamorous, bland, or blahh, but pleasant and good.  Might be worth a vacation in your island hideaway but not necessarily a permanent stay.
