Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo (1977)

Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo(1977)

You would think with Dean Jones reprising his role as Jim Douglas, HGTMC would be a giant festival of laughs. Add Nutty Don Knots with the cool name of Wheely Applegate and the lovable Bug and how could you go wrong. Let’s not forget about the wacky jewel thieves and the female  car Herbie gets the Love Bug for. Lots of opportunities for laughs.

And maybe they were there, but I was distracted by a lack in the script. I know that the Herbie movies are not supposed to be in-depth Oscar winning material but HEY, I still expect them to feed off the previous films and to explain things that happen perviously in the other storylines. Jim D was married at the end of the ‘The Love Bug’, and now here he is off running off after another female race driver.
Why is he not married?  It never explains why he is not with his significant other from the first film. I guess this lack of continuity  just bugged me. Maybe it shouldn’t have, but hey they explained the characters away believably in the first sequel why not this one? What happen to the Buddy Hacket Character? Where did the Don Knots Character come from? Too many questions from a  movie that isn’t meant to answer them. Your just supposed to fasten you seat belts and go along for the ride. I suppose the bumps in the script kept me from fully enjoying the ride although it is a Herbie movie and if you own the others it wouldn’t be complete without Monte Carlo in the collection.

You can always imagine for your self what happen to the others. Maybe this is Disney’s way of making the audience think in a non-thinking picture. Or maybe I really do read too much into things.
