Rob Roy: The Highland Rouge (1954)

Rob Roy: The Highland Rouge (1954)

The Scots vs. the English in another Disney historical epic without Mel Gibson to whop butt. It is essentially somewhat of a war picture. Unlike other Disney pictures made before or since. It has some more interesting dialogue and action type scenes. As much as I think old Disney 50’s action films are well done and good, I couldn’t watch them over and over again. I have been writing reviews while watching these Disney historical epics. I think I prefer the comedies. I guess that is more my genre.

For some reason the VHS tape is squeaking in the machine. There is only one other one from the golden age that was made in 66 that is not available on DVD or at my local library. I could find it on EBAY I think if I looked. ‘The Fighting Prince of Donegal” is what it is called. One IMDB review said it is as Irish as a bowl of Lucky Charms. Here is another grand well done Disney Historical Drama.

Part of the fun of Rob Roy is the fact that he always manages to sneak away from the British. At one point his men use a herd of sheep to stop the carriage that has Rob Roy prisoner. The British Government can be made to look like such jerks in historical dramas. Disney live action films looked so much different in the early stages of the production history. Just what did I mean by that statement?

My mother pointed out while watching Rob Roy that his shirts are whiter then mine after wearing it for four weeks and crawling through the mud. She seemed to like this one the best out of the historical Disney movies that we have watched together, while it is considered the least of the three English made pictures.

Not a bad film. Lots of fighting and running around. Untypical Disney Pic. Typical type of Historical Dramatic War Pic. Not on DVD, again only on VHS wherever you can get it.

Update: 3/21/11 It is now available on DVD.
