The Computer wore Tennis Shoes (1969)
This film is a great historical film.
1. This film is another look into the early film career of Kurt Russell.
2. It highlights a time in history (1969) when getting a computer was no easy task. They weren’t as plentiful and small as the laptop I am writing this review on, they were big huge machines that took up a lot of room. I like the fact that some explanation of the inner-workings of the computer were talked about by one of the characters.
3. This is a great example of one of the most boring of all Disney movies from the classic era.
Even the chase scene at the end of the film with paint landing all over the villain could not save this film from being B O R I N G. The special effects are sub-par and the main character is annoying and not funny, though he tries very hard. He goes from one emotion to the next with no real convincing amount of time. I’m a jerk. Now I’m a good guy again. Now I’m locked in a iron clad lockbox.
He seems to play the same character to some degree that he plays in ‘The Barefoot Executive’, although that movie was a lot funnier, mainly because that film had a monkey in it. Had this film had a monkey, it might have been somewhat more funny. Maybe if it had Dean Jones, it might have been funnier. Dean Jones rarely disappoints. He plays in a lot of Disney films which is the only reason I bring him up. This is not to say I don’t like Kurt Russell. I liked ‘Executive Decision and ‘Big Trouble in Little China’, very much.
Amazingly enough this film spawned two sequels making this a trilogy. In this film he is as smart as a computer. The next film he becomes invisible and then the Strongest Man in the World. It was also popular enough to have the film remade in 1995 with Kirk Camron. It would be interesting to see the remake and how they handled the big change in computer technology from 1969.
For the historical reasons I listed above this film is worth seeing. For the moviegoer who doesn’t want to waste his time, try another Disney Classic instead.
