Pollyanna (1960)

Pollyanna (1960)

POLLYANNA, want to come out and play?
POLLYANNA, will go fishing, want to?
-The Cry of Jimmy Bean the Orphan

Journey to the Town of Harrigton, a city taken out of the beginning of the 20th century and preserved for you to witness on Celluloid.  It is a time when Ice was brought to your house instead of coming from your refrigerator. It is a time when the Church Fair was a big deal. It was a time when orphanages were still called orphanages.  This classic period of time happen in a place that was a nest of uptight and nervous individuals. This includes....

The Reverend Ford who found joy in breathing fire and brimstone at his Sunday services.

The hypochondriac Mrs Snow.

The acidic recluse Mr. Pendergast.

The rich Polly Harrington whose wealth controls the town. Polly is very uptight. She controls the Reverend’s sermons. She control who her maid sees in her spare time. If she doesn’t want the town Bazar to happen, it shouldn’t happen.

All this pessimism is challenged when Polly’s orphaned niece Pollyanna comes to town with a bright optimistic cherry disposition that starts to infect the town’s inhabitants as she spreads sunshine to everyone she meets.

For example Polly points out that God is more about Love and Mercy and not about fire and brimstone.
When she shares this particular quote from Abraham Lincoln with the good reverend, "When you look for the bad in mankind, expecting to find it, you surely will",  he responds by adjusting his sermons to reflect this new found insight on life.

During the course of this sunny feel good ride through uptight county you will witness a change of hearts, a battle of egos, romance, smiles, cute orphans, and near tragedy.

Pollyanna, based upon the novel of the same name (1913) by Eleanor Porter, marks Hayley Mills debut as a top Disney star.  It is a fun heartwarming picture that reminds us all that in the words of Fulton Sheen, ‘Life is Worth Living’.
