I believe that there were not more then 7 or 8 people in the whole movie. Set around the time of the Civil War or just after it, OY tells the drama of a boy, his mom, his brother and their dog. The dog is very resourcful in chasing away unwanted characters around the homestead. He chases away bob cats wolves and mad Russians.
He chases away Mama bear after the very smart younger brother of Tommy Kirk, (Kevin Corcoran) starts trying to drag baby bear off to be a pet.
A very compelling and yes sad Drama from the golden years of Disney. You will cry if you have heart and are paying attention. But the film stands the test of time and is still as stirring today as it must have been seeing it on the big screen back in 1957. It deserves a view if you want a classic drama of a boy and his dog, his brother and his mother.
Critic Jeff Walls wrote: "Old Yeller, like The Wizard of Oz and Star Wars, has come to be more than just a movie; it has become a part of our culture. If you were to walk around asking random people, you would be hard-pressed to find someone who did not know the story of Old Yeller, some who didn’t enjoy it or someone who didn’t cry. The movie’s ending has become as famous as any other in film history."
