Napoleon and Samantha (1972)

Napoleon and Samantha (1972)

A very depressing and fun Disney adventure. Two kids including a very young Jodie Foster roam the back hills country on a elderly circus lion, while Michael Douglass plays an adult who pretty much should be arrested for helping a kid bury his dead grandpa and who leaves the kids alone with a stranger who turns out to be a wanted murderer. As in true Disney fasion there is a somewhat fun chase scene at the end. It’s also fun to see the kids ride around on a lion.

Despite the film being somewhat annoying it is an interesting Disney film to watch because you get to witness some top notch actors early in their carriers. Also lions roaming around in domistic society always proves to be entertaining.

Napoleon and Samantha changes gears a few times. It starts out as an intimate small town coming-of-age tale, develops into a grand expedition in the wild, and then finishes with a quick-paced, action-packed climax. However, this refreshingly only leaves surprises ahead for the viewer. Through it all, the film remains entertaining and most interesting. The hybrid of subjects and tones works incredibly well, as the story stays fresh and highly watchable. Ultimate Disney Review
